The Influence of Family Support in Managing OCD Symptoms

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a challenging mental health condition that affects approximately 2.3% of the world's population. It is characterized by recurring and unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive, ritualistic behaviors or mental acts (compulsions).

There are effective treatments available for OCD, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication. But having a supportive family can significantly impact an individual's ability to manage their symptoms. In this blog, we will discuss the influence of family support in managing OCD symptoms.

The Role of Control in OCD and Perfectionism

There is a lot of control involved in OCD, perfectionism, and even eating disorders. It is not uncommon to see parents who are overly controlling, trying to make their child perfect. This control can stem from a fear of embarrassment or shame if their child does not meet certain expectations. While it may come from a place of love and concern, this type of controlling behavior can be harmful to the individual struggling with OCD.

As parents, they don't want to feel any type of embarrassment or shame, which can lead to them trying to control their child's behavior and thoughts. However, this type of micromanaging can actually worsen OCD symptoms. Individuals with OCD already have a heightened sense of responsibility and fear of making mistakes. The added pressure from parents to be perfect can exacerbate these feelings and make it even more challenging for the individual to manage their symptoms.

Influence Them in a Positive Way, Not Control Them

Instead of trying to control their child's behavior and thoughts, parents should focus on influencing them in a positive way. This can look like creating a space within the family where there is no sweeping under the rug. Meaning that problems can be talked about and addressed in a calm, clear, and respectful manner. When individuals with OCD feel supported and understood by their family, it can help them to open up about their struggles and seek treatment.

In an environment where individuals feel comfortable talking about their OCD, they are less likely to engage in secretive behaviors or isolate themselves. This can lead to better communication within the family and a deeper understanding of how OCD affects their loved one. It also creates a place where any problems can be talked about in a calm and respectful manner, rather than causing heightened emotions.

Be Careful About Heightening, Don't Want Anyone to Get Ramped Up

Shows a person talking to their loved one. An OCD Therapist in Nashville, TN will support you with tips on how to discuss OCD. Search "OCD Therapist Brentwood, TN" to find support!

Being aware of how certain words or actions can heighten an individual's OCD symptoms is important for family members. It is essential to have open and honest communication, but it should be done in a way that does not trigger or worsen their loved one's OCD. This means being mindful of the language used when discussing their OCD and avoiding any judgment or criticism.

Family members can also support their loved one by ensuring they are taking their medication and working with an OCD therapist in Nashville, TN or an anxiety therapist in Nashville, TN regularly. Being an active participant in their treatment can show the individual that they have a strong support system and encourage them to continue seeking help.

The Importance of Family Therapy

For individuals with OCD who are children or teens, it is crucial to involve family therapy as part of their treatment plan. This type of therapy can help not only the individual but also the entire family. The health of the home is huge when it comes to managing OCD symptoms. And family support can make all the difference.

Through family therapy, everyone can learn how to cope with their own issues. And also navigate any problems that may have arisen within the family dynamic. It also provides a safe space for open communication and understanding of how OCD affects the individual and the family as a whole. Family therapy can be an invaluable tool in managing OCD symptoms and fostering a healthy and supportive environment for individuals with this condition.

It's Okay to Not Be Perfect

Remember, it's okay to not be perfect. Perfection is an unattainable and unrealistic expectation that can add unnecessary stress and pressure. Accepting imperfection means acknowledging that it's completely normal to have flaws and make mistakes. This acceptance can be a liberating experience. But it also helps to foster a healthier self-image and alleviating the anxiety that often accompanies OCD.

Family members can help to promote this message by modeling self-acceptance. Especially by not placing unrealistic expectations on their loved ones. Emphasize that everyone makes mistakes, and it's okay to learn and grow from them. By creating an environment of acceptance and understanding, individuals with OCD can feel supported in their journey towards managing their symptoms.

Do Not Use OCD Against the Individual

Finally, it is essential to never use an individual's OCD against them. Without proper understanding and education about this disorder, family members may unintentionally make comments or actions that can be detrimental to their loved one's well-being. It's really important to remember that OCD is not a choice. Individuals with this condition already struggle enough without feeling judged or misunderstood.

Instead of using their OCD against them, family members should use it as an opportunity to educate themselves. But also learn how they can support their loved one. This means avoiding comments like "just stop doing those rituals" or "you're just being silly." Instead, try to understand their perspective and offer compassion and support. By doing so, you can help your loved one feel seen, heard, and validated in their struggles.

Seek Support From an OCD Therapist in Nashville, TN

Family members can struggle to understand their loved one's experience with OCD, and that is completely normal. Seeking support from an OCD therapist in Nashville, TN or an anxiety therapist in Nashville, TN can provide education and guidance all on how to best support the individual with OCD. It's essential to remember that taking care of oneself is just as important as supporting a loved one through their struggles.

A therapist can also help family members navigate their own feelings and emotions surrounding their loved one's OCD. Seeking support can make all the difference in managing and coping with this disorder as a family unit. Remember, it's not just the individual with OCD who needs support, but also their loved ones. How to Help a Loved One with OCD: Tips for Supporting and Encouraging Them

As a loved one of someone with OCD, it can be difficult to know how to support and encourage them in their journey. You understand their compulsions, obsessions, and rituals may be causing them distress and interfering with their daily life. They need your support and encouragement, but it can be challenging to know how to navigate the situation without unintentionally making them feel worse.

There are ways to support and encourage your loved one with OCD that can make a positive impact on their learning to manage their symptoms and improve their overall well-being. You can help them understand that you are there for them and that you want to support their journey towards recovery. Here are some tips for supporting and encouraging your loved one with OCD:

Remind Them You're There for Them

Shows two people standing closely. Represents how an ocd therapist in nashville, tn can support your loved one. Search "ocd therapist brentwood, tn" today!

One of the best things you can do for someone you care about with OCD is to let them know that you're there to support them. Remind them that they can talk to you about their struggles, and you'll listen without judging them. Be willing to listen whenever they need to talk and join in conversations or activities related to their treatment plan if they want you to. Listening actively is super important when you want to be there for someone you care about.

It's more than just hearing their words. It means taking the time to understand their feelings, support what they're going through, and being patient and kind. When they talk about things that bother them, don't try to fix it right away or give advice. Instead, show them you understand and that their feelings matter. This kind of support can make a big difference and help them feel less alone. Just remember, you don't have to solve their problems, but you can create a safe space where they can share their thoughts and feelings without worrying about being judged or rejected.

Show Up For Them

Ultimately, you cannot make your loved one seek treatment and support from an OCD therapist in Nashville, TN, or an anxiety therapist in Brentwood, TN. However, you can show up for them by accompanying them to therapy sessions if they want you there. You can offer to wait in the waiting room so that they know you're just a few steps away if they need support or reassurance.

Alternatively, you can come with them for the first 10 minutes of OCD therapy and then wait in the waiting room. It's important to respect their boundaries and not try to force them into anything, but showing up for them can make a big difference in making them feel supported and cared for. Also, checking in with them regularly to see how they're doing and offering help when needed can show that you are there for them in a non-intrusive way.

Engage in Values Conversations

Sometimes, individuals with OCD might spend a lot of time on their rituals. It can get in the way of things they truly care about, like spending time with family or friends. In these moments, you can gently remind your loved one about their values and what truly matters to them. For instance, you might say, "Bob, I know your family means the world to you. I'm worried your rituals are taking away from the time you could be spending with them.” Remember, this isn't about making them feel bad about their OCD. It's about helping them see how their OCD might be affecting their life and the things they care about.

One way to help them calm their mind and observe their thoughts is by practicing mindfulness. Encourage them to take a few deep breaths and bring their attention to the present moment. This can help them separate from their OCD thoughts and not get caught up in them. Additionally, you can offer to join them in activities like meditation that promote mindfulness and can be beneficial for managing OCD symptoms. If your loved one is open to it, gently suggest that they try to observe their thoughts as if they're floating by like clouds in the sky. They don't need to hold onto these thoughts or push them away. Just noticing them can be a step towards managing their OCD symptoms. Mindfulness can be a helpful tool, but it's important to do it in a way that feels comfortable and respectful to the person you're supporting.

Use an Empathetic and Encouraging Tone

Shows a couple talking. Represents how an anxiety therapist in nashville, tn or an ocd therapist in nashville, tn can support your loved one.

When you're talking to someone you care about who has OCD, it's really important to use a kind and supportive tone. Try not to use words or phrases that might make them feel more anxious or pressured; that could actually make their OCD symptoms worse. Instead, talk to them directly and let them know that you understand how hard it must be for them to manage their OCD. For example, you could say, "I can imagine how difficult it is for you to deal with your OCD every day. I'm here to support you in any way I can." You can also suggest some helpful ideas without being too pushy and use simple words that are easy to understand.

Your loved one with OCD is sensitive to preventing catastrophes. And they may think that their rituals prevent bad things from happening. So, when you're trying to support them, it's important to avoid using language or a tone that might make them feel like something bad will happen if they don't listen to you. Instead, validate their feelings and provide solutions without yelling or screaming. Remember, your loved one is doing their best to manage their OCD, and a supportive and empathetic tone can make a positive impact on them.

Try Not To Encourage Perfectionism

It's natural for people to want to be really good at things and do them perfectly. But for people dealing with OCD, this desire for perfection can make it hard for them to get better. If you're supporting someone with OCD, remember that it's important to remind them that they're human and that it's okay to mess up sometimes. We all do. Messing up doesn't mean we're not as good as others; it just means we're human.

Let them know it's important to approach challenges with humility and patience. Their value doesn't diminish because of struggles. It's okay to have good days and bad days, and they don't need to shame themselves for not having everything under control all the time. Encourage them to be kind to themselves and acknowledge their progress, no matter how small it may seem. This can help combat perfectionistic tendencies and alleviate some of the pressure they might feel from their OCD.

Seeking Professional Help

It's important to find a therapist who not only has the expertise but also has a compassionate and understanding approach to treating OCD.

Their expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy techniques can assist in identifying and changing unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors. Catholic Counseling for Couples During the Christmas Season in Nashville

The holidays are known for the joy and celebration they bring. But for some couples, it can also be a difficult time. The stress of family gatherings, the financial strain from gift-giving, and the added pressure to have a perfect holiday can all take a toll on relationships. You may relate to the feeling of wanting to escape it all or even feeling hopeless.

But during this time, it's important to remember the reason for the season and make room for Jesus in every aspect of our lives. Including our relationships. As a Catholic couples counselor in Nashville, TN, I understand the challenges that can arise during the Christmas season. That's why in this blog, I want to offer support and guidance for you and your spouse.

Understanding the Christmas Season

Shows a couple reading the Bible. Represents how catholic counseling in nashville, tn and a couples counselor in nashville, tn can support you.

It's easy to get caught up in the commercialization of Christmas. The constant bombardment of advertisements, sales, and gift-giving can make it hard to focus on what really matters. As Catholics, we know that the birth of Jesus is at the heart of this holiday. But do we truly take the time to reflect and understand its significance?

Advent, the period leading up to Christmas, is not just about remembering Jesus' first coming. It's also a time of preparation for his return. However, you and your spouse are so busy with work, holiday preparations, and other responsibilities that it can be challenging to make time for spiritual reflection. But how can you when you are feeling so overwhelmed and stressed?

How to Find Joy in the Christmas Season

Despite the challenges of this season, it is also a time for great joy, expectation, and fun. As we celebrate Jesus' birth and his love for us, we can also find joy in our relationships with our spouses. This is especially important during difficult times. Remember that Jesus was born into humble beginnings, and he understands our struggles.

Advent is supposed to be joyful whereas Easter is meant to be somber and mournful. But it almost seems as if it's the other way around. Easter gets the bright colors, cheerful decorations, and happy songs. Meanwhile, Advent is overshadowed by the commercialization of Christmas. It's hidden behind all of the anxiety and stress that comes with this season. But looking for the joy and hope of Advent can help you cope with these challenges. These can be moments of reflection, prayer, and quality time with your spouse. Or times when your children can hear the true story of Christmas.

Making Room for Jesus in Your Relationship

As a couples counselor, I often see how external factors can strain relationships during the holiday season. Anxiety from work, family dynamics, and financial pressure can all put a strain on your marriage. But there's also the added pressure of finding the perfect gifts for your spouse and loved ones. All of this can leave little room in your heart, mind, and relationship for Jesus.

Your marriage can then take a backseat to the business of Christmas. This may not only cause tension between you and your spouse but can also affect your spiritual connection. Ascension Press offers wonderful devotionals and materials that can help guide you toward making room for Jesus in your relationship while also making sure you're not focused on the commercialization of Christmas.

Suggestions for Couples in Nashville

As a Catholic couples counselor based in Nashville, TN, I highly recommend incorporating the true meaning of Christmas into your holiday celebrations. It not only helps you and your spouse keep your eye on the prize but also sets an example for your children. It also allows for more time to truly connect with your spouse and strengthen your relationship.

Set Aside Time For Spiritual Reflection

When the holidays are one after another from November to January, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle. But taking the time to reflect on the meaning of Christmas can help you and your spouse find peace amidst all the chaos. This can be done through prayer, attending mass, or reading devotionals together. You can even watch your favorite Hallmark movie that is centered around the true spirit of Christmas.

Decorate With Purpose

Make room for Jesus in every room of your house by having icons and other religious decorations in each room of your house. This can serve as a reminder to you and your family that Jesus is the reason for the season. Consider setting up a nativity set in each room or displaying icons specific to Advent. Not only will this add to the festive atmosphere, but it will also help your children remember the true meaning of Christmas. For example, even decorate your children's playroom with religious decorations and toys.

Emphasize Three Gifts For Your Children

In the spirit of Jesus receiving three gifts from the wise men, consider giving your children three meaningful gifts. This can serve as a reminder that Christmas is not just about receiving material possessions but also about the love we share with one another. You can even give them gifts that relate to the story of Christmas, such as frankincense, gold, and myrrh. A more modern take could be giving them one gift for reading, one for wearing, and one they asked for.

Communicate With Your Family

Shows a man on the phone. Represents how catholic counseling in nashville, tn can support you in setting boundaries. Search "christian counseling brentwood, tn" today!

Not everyone is going to have the same values or beliefs as you and your spouse. This may lead to family members giving your children gifts that don't align with the true spirit of Christmas. Politely communicate with them about your wishes for your children's gifts, but also remember to be grateful for their love and generosity. Explain to them that gifts are okay but emphasize the importance of remembering and celebrating the true meaning of Christmas.

Serve Others Together

Christmas is a season of giving and serving others. This can be a great way for you and your spouse to bond while also instilling the values of charity and compassion in your children. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen, donate gifts to families in need or simply spend time with loved ones who may feel lonely during this time of year. Serving others together can bring you closer as a couple and allow your family to experience the true joy of giving.

Seeking Support if Needed

The holiday season can be overwhelming for everyone, especially if you and your spouse are facing challenges in your relationship. There can be many reasons for anxiety, stress, and tension during this time all of which can affect your relationship and the dynamics within your family. This is where seeking the support of Catholic couples counseling in Nashville, TN can be beneficial. It provides a safe and supportive space for you and your spouse to communicate, address challenges, and strengthen your relationship.

In Catholic couples counseling, the focus is not just on improving communication and resolving conflicts. It also incorporates spiritual guidance and principles to help you and your spouse grow closer to each other and God. This type of therapy can be particularly helpful during the holiday season when there's a lot of external pressure that can affect your relationship. Your Catholic couples counselor in Nashville, TN can guide you and your spouse toward a more fulfilling and spiritually connected relationship, even during the busiest time of the year.

Advent is a time for joy, love, and giving. But it's also a time when you can easily get caught up in the commercialization of Christmas leaving you and your spouse feeling disconnected and overwhelmed. But by seeking Catholic couples counseling in Nashville, TN, and incorporating the true meaning of Christmas into your celebrations, you can create a more meaningful and spiritually fulfilling holiday season for you and your family.

Family Conflicts During the Holidays: Tips from Catholic Counseling in Nashville, TN

The holiday season is often portrayed as a time of love, joy, and togetherness with family. However, for many people, the reality can be quite different. Family conflicts during the holidays are common and can add stress and tension to an already busy and emotional time of year. Family can judge, criticize, and argue with each other, causing hurt feelings and resentment.

This can be especially difficult for individuals who are struggling with personal issues such as mental health, addiction, or relationship problems. Or, if you're not as devout as your family members, you may feel judged or excluded during religious celebrations In this blog, we'll discuss tips for dealing with family conflicts during the holidays from a compassionate and faith-based perspective of Catholic counseling in Nashville, TN.

Prioritize Your Conflicts

Shows family conflict. Represents how a therapist in brentwood, tn with catholic counseling in nashville, tn.

The first step to managing family conflicts during the holidays is to identify what's really important to you. Not all conflicts are equal. So think about which ones are worth addressing and which ones can be let go. For example, if your cousin forgot to bring the dish they promised for dinner, it may not be worth getting into a heated argument over. Focus on the conflicts that are truly important to you and let go of the ones that can be easily resolved or aren't worth your energy.

However, if the situation is toxic or harmful to your well-being, it's important to set boundaries and protect yourself. The conflict may involve harsh criticism, lack of boundaries, or gossiping about others. In cases like this, it's crucial to prioritize your own well-being and not allow toxic behavior to continue around you. It's okay to say no to a family gathering or to limit your time with certain individuals if it means protecting yourself from harm.

Communicate and Set Boundaries

If you decide to address a conflict, it's important to do so with empathy, compassion, and clear communication. Speak from your own perspective using "I" statements instead of accusing or blaming others. For example, "I feel hurt when you criticize my choices" is more effective than "You always criticize me".

Additionally, setting boundaries is crucial in maintaining healthy relationships and managing conflicts. Make it clear what you will not tolerate and stick to those boundaries. If a family member continues to cross them, it's important to enforce consequences such as leaving the gathering or limiting contact with that individual.

Know Your Boundaries

It's crucial to know your boundaries in any relationship, especially with family. If a particular conflict is toxic or hurtful, it's essential to protect yourself and not allow it to continue. This may mean setting boundaries and clearly communicating them with your family members. For example, if there's a specific topic that always leads to arguments, you may choose not to discuss it or simply leave the room when it comes up.

For example, criticizing your parenting skills or constantly asking when you're going to get married can be hurtful and harmful. It's important to establish boundaries and communicate them assertively. A therapist in Brentwood, TN can help you identify your boundaries and discuss strategies for communicating them effectively with your family. Your therapist can also help you navigate the line between hurtful and harmful behavior and determine when it's necessary to take a step back from certain family members.

Think to Yourself "Is It Worth It?"

Shows two young adults hugging. Represents how catholic counseling in nashville, tn and a therapist in brentwood, tn can support you during the holidays.

When conflicts arise with family members, ask yourself: "Is it worth making a big deal out of this?" Sometimes, the answer may be yes. But often, it's not. In those cases, you can choose to let go and move on. Remember that your priority during the holidays is to enjoy quality time with loved ones.

However, if you do decide to address a conflict, try to approach it from a place of empathy and understanding. This can help de-escalate tensions and lead to a more productive conversation. But know that it's also okay to walk away from a conflict if it becomes too heated or toxic. You can always come back to it when everyone is calmer and more level-headed.

Have a Signal for When It's Time to Leave

If you find yourself in a situation where the conflict continues despite your best efforts, it's important to have a signal for when it's time to leave. This can be especially helpful if you're staying with family or attending a big event. It could be as simple as excusing yourself to use the restroom or taking a walk around the block. Having a signal can help you take a step back from the conflict, refocus your thoughts, and decide on the best course of action.

Also, having a friend or partner who can help you execute your signal and exit plan can be beneficial. They can provide support and help you stick to your boundaries if needed. Plus, if you are staying with family, they can give you an excuse to leave if the situation becomes too uncomfortable.

Seek Counseling for Support

Shows a couple in couples counseling in nashville, tn. Represents how christian counseling brentwood, tn can help couples navigate the holidays.

Dealing with family conflicts during the holidays can be overwhelming and emotionally draining. Seeking counseling can provide much-needed support and guidance during this time. For example, couples counseling in Nashville, TN can help you and your partner navigate conflicts with family together, strengthening your relationship in the process.

And if you're looking for faith-based counseling, Christian counseling in Brentwood, TN can provide compassionate support while incorporating your religious beliefs into therapy. A therapist can help you explore your feelings, identify boundaries, and develop coping strategies for managing conflicts with family. For example, if you feel insecure in your faith or judged by your family, a Christian therapist can help you work through those emotions and find peace within yourself.

From influencers promoting beauty products to fashion industry icons setting impossible standards, young adults are bombarded with these images daily. In fact, it's safe to say that your fingertips have been at the tips of beauty, influencers, and trends more than any Roman emperor or fashion industry icon in the past.

This can lead to constant exposure to unrealistic beauty standards, causing young adults to develop a distorted perception of what's considered "beautiful." The pressure to conform and meet these standards can result in increased anxiety, shame, and perfectionism. For instance, none of the beautiful women in the past would even be able to compete with the standards of beauty we see online today.

But Do You Realize How Long It Takes?

It's easy to get caught up in the comparison game and feel like we're not good enough. But, do you ever stop and think about how much effort goes into achieving these "perfect" looks? The truth is that many influencers and fashion icons have a team of professionals behind them to help them achieve their appearance.

They take the time to get ready, use filters and editing tools, and often get paid for promoting a certain beauty standard. This is not something that young adults should be expected to achieve on their own. It literally can take a team and a lot of time, which is not realistic for most individuals.

This Doesn't Just Go for Appearances

This can go for achievements and successes as well. It's not just about looking perfect but also about being perfect in every aspect of life. The pressure to have the perfect job, relationships, and lifestyle can also contribute to increased anxiety and perfectionism. It can be detrimental to one's mental health. There are expectations of where you should be at this phase in life, what you should have accomplished, and how you should look while doing it.

This constant pressure can lead to increased anxiety and feelings of inadequacy. Look at Matt Rife, a 28-year-old comedian. He is good-looking, talented, and successful. He owns a Tesla, but people tend to forget that even though he's been working hard for years this is not the norm for a 28-year-old. These unrealistic standards can create an unhealthy mindset, making individuals feel like they need to be perfect all the time.

It Creates an Unrealistic World

The expectations set by the internet and social media are often unattainable and can create a distorted perception of reality. This not only affects self-esteem but can also impact relationships and overall mental health. As a therapist in Nashville, TN, I see young adults struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, and perfectionism on a regular basis. They feel like they should be living up to these unrealistic beauty standards and achieving success at a young age, but in reality, that's not the case for most people.

They don't realize that the individuals on the internet who are the face of these standards have specifically curated and edited their content to portray a perfect image. This is not real life, and it's essential for young adults to understand that. It also makes people feel as if they can do things they wouldn't normally do in real life, like online bullying or striving for an unrealistic appearance.

They Only See the End Product

Shows Serena Williams celebrating. Represents how online therapy nashville with a therapist in brentwood, tn can help you see the hard work instead of just the end result.

We often only see the final result, not the process it took to get there. Take Serena Williams for example. She's a world-renowned tennis player, and many people look up to her for her talent and success. But what we don't see is the countless hours of practice, hard work, and dedication that she puts into her craft. We just see the end product, and this can make us feel like we're not doing enough or not good enough.

In reality, you have to try harder or train like Serena to achieve that level of success. You have to have goals, dreams, and high expectations. But it's important not to base them on the internet and social media. It's essential to set realistic expectations for yourself and understand that everyone's journey is different.

The Link Between Perfectionism and Anxiety

After all of the points mentioned above, it's clear that there is a link between perfectionism and anxiety in young adults. The pressure to meet unrealistic beauty standards and achieve success at a young age can lead to increased anxiety, fear of failure, and perfectionistic tendencies. It sets the expectation of "there is no room for mistakes" which can be incredibly damaging to one's mental health.

As a young adult, you may see your friends, peers, or strangers going to Ivy League schools or getting their dream job. But you may not see the hard work, sacrifices, and struggles they went through to get there. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy, imposter syndrome, and constant comparison. But what do you do when you feel like there's too much going on and not enough time to do anything?

Anxiety and Social Media: Digital Platforms and Mental Health

Navigating social media can be overwhelming for many individuals, especially when it comes to maintaining positive mental health. As a therapist in Nashville, TN who specializes in anxiety therapy, I have seen firsthand the impact that social media can have on our well-being. Seeing all the negative news, comparing ourselves to others, and experiencing shallow communication can all contribute to feelings of anxiety and unhappiness.

It's important to remember that social media is a tool. When used in moderation and with boundaries, it can serve as a positive influence on our lives. However, we must be mindful of how much time we spend scrolling through negative content and allowing it to impact our mental health.

Don't Look at the Doom and Gloom

Shows a person on their phone. Represents how a therapist in nashville, tn can support you through anxiety therapy in nashville, tn.

It's easy to fall into the trap of "doomscrolling". This term is talking about the endless scrolling through negative news and content that only serves to increase our anxiety. For instance, constantly checking the news or social media for updates can leave us feeling overwhelmed and anxious. But we must remember that this constant exposure to anxious things and bad news is not healthy.

It's not healthy for our physical or mental well-being. We need exposure to real-life moments, relationships, and problem-solving in the present. Even though social media can be a great tool to stay connected with others, it's important to set boundaries and curate our content carefully. It's important to regulate our social media usage and not rely on it as a coping mechanism.

Using It Be Positive

Social media can have a positive impact on our lives, but only if we curate our feeds carefully. Follow accounts and pages that make you feel good and inspire you. You can also use the screen time notifications and limits to help regulate your usage. Also, as a therapist or other professional, using the internet to drive traffic to your website or provide support and resources can be a powerful tool for creating positive change in the digital world.

Have Boundaries, Take Breaks, and Do Social Media Cleanses

Setting boundaries is crucial when it comes to using social media. Communicating through likes, comments, and messages is not the same as having real conversations with people in person. It's important to maintain those connections with others outside of social media. This can play a huge part in feeling isolated, disconnected, and unhappy. Depression? Anxiety? It can all be exasperated by social media usage when it's not balanced with real-life experiences.

It's a shallow and surface level of connection that can leave us feeling unfulfilled. This is where taking a break from social media to engage with the world around us can be beneficial. Going on a social media cleanse for a week, or even longer, can help us. It can help to detox from all the negative and anxious components of these platforms. You might even notice that you feel more present, mindful, and content with yourself and your life.

Regulating Ourselves Through Other Means

Shows people hiking. Represents how anxiety therapy in nashville, tn can help you find ways to regulate. Search for a therapist in nashville, tn today!

When we rely on social media as our main coping mechanism, it can actually make us more anxious. Instead of learning healthy ways to deal with stress and regulate ourselves, we are only feeding into the cycle by using negative material. It's actually dysregulating and can lead to increased anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. Why does the media allow such negative news and unhealthy material? Because it sells.

Just like how the news can be more popular when it's negative, social media platforms thrive on our attention and engagement. Our parents and their parents before them did not become anxious after watching the news. Why? Because they were only exposed to it for 30 minutes whereas we are exposed to it for 10+ hours a day. The constant bombardment of negative news and unhealthy content is not something our minds and bodies were designed to handle.

When Social Media Bloomed, So Did Anxiety

Around 2012-2014, the rates of anxiety and depression skyrocketed with the rise of social media platforms like Facebook and the widespread use of smartphones. We are constantly connected to our devices. Therefore, we are connected to a constant stream of information that can be damaging to our mental health. For instance, we are constantly comparing ourselves to others, feeling the pressure to be perfect, and seeing only the highlight reels of others' lives.

Plus, as it becomes more acceptable for children and teens to use social media, it becomes more influential on their developing minds. This is why it's crucial for us to not only regulate our own usage but also guide and educate the younger generations on healthy ways to navigate social media. It's already hard for us adults, so we really need to be mindful of how much we expose our children and younger siblings to these platforms.

Balancing Busy Lives: Prioritizing Date Night in Nashville, TN

In the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, it's often easy to forget the importance of dedicating quality time to our relationships, especially in a bustling city like Nashville, TN where the rhythm of life can seem nonstop. But remember when the New England Patriots were down 28-3 in the Super Bowl?

Their triumph wasn't just luck; it was the result of constant conditioning, practice, and effort. The same applies to our relationships. We must invest time and effort regularly, conditioning our bond with our partner to withstand whatever life throws at us. To all the busy couples in Nashville, TN, have you had your date night this week?

Date Night Doesn't Have to Be Expensive

Shows a couple hiking. Represents how a therapist in nashville, tn can help you plan date night in nashville, tn.

When we think of date nights, we often envision a fancy dinner or an expensive outing. But the reality is, it doesn't have to be that way. Date nights can be as simple as a picnic in the park or a movie night at home. It's about setting aside time to connect with your partner and focus on each other without the distractions of everyday life.

And with the current state of the economy, it's more important than ever to find affordable ways to prioritize quality time with our significant other. It could be a romantic dinner downtown, an online therapy session, a picnic in one of our beautiful parks, or simply a quiet evening at home. It’s not about the money spent; it's about the time spent. It's about checking in, showing admiration, and reconnecting with each other.

Do You Wonder Why There's No Passion in Your Relationship?

If you find yourself lacking passion in your relationship, it's time to put in the work and pursue each other. It's not enough to just talk about household tasks or responsibilities. Take the time to really connect and communicate with your partner about how things are going for each of you individually and as a couple.

Perhaps it's because we've mistaken talking about mundane chores as quality conversation, but this isn't about who takes out the trash; it's about reigniting the spark, the passion, and the love. So, let's start prioritizing our relationships and putting in the effort to make our marriages a beacon of inspiration for others.

Would You Rather Invest in Your Relationship Now or a Divorce Later?

Shows a couple holding hands. Represents how engaging in online therapy nashville with a therapist in nashville, tn will strengthen your relationship.

We all want to spend the rest of our lives with our partners, but it takes effort and investment to make that happen. So why wait until things get rocky or even worse, end in divorce? The key is to prioritize and invest in our relationships now so that they can continue to thrive and grow. Not only will this benefit your marriage, but also your entire family dynamic and even your work life.

As a couple, strive to be a power duo that helps other couples become stronger as well. Make your marriage so good that you can inspire others to do the same. Do date night once a week and put in the effort to show love and appreciation for each other. For instance, check in with each other about how you're feeling and what you need. Also, show the admiration and respect that your partner deserves.

Storms Will Come, But Your Relationship Will Endure

Storms may look different than the ones you see on the weather forecast. They can come in the form of having children who depend on you, caring for aging parents, or facing any other unexpected challenges. But if we have a strong foundation and continue to invest in our relationships, we can face those storms together and come out even stronger as a couple.

Putting in the effort to have small things like date night or even bigger things like trips can remind us of the good times and why we fell in love with our partner in the first place; this can help when we are facing these storms and give us the strength to endure.

THE Research is Clear: Make Time for Your Relationship

Shows a couple dancing. Represents how a therapist in nashville, tn can support you and your spouse with online therapy nashville.

Research has shown that investing even small amounts of time, like 15 minutes before bed each night can greatly improve the quality of a relationship. This is where we can truly connect and focus on each other without any distractions. It's not about discussing household tasks or arguing but rather checking in with each other and nurturing our bond.

Make time to bask in the solitude for a few hours so that you and your spouse can really think and talk whether it's about your relationship or anything else on your mind; it can do wonders for strengthening your connection. Think of your spouse, instead of a person you see every day, as someone you're spending the rest of your life with and who you WANT to spend time with. You NEED to put effort into your relationship for it to thrive. This requires you to put in the time and effort necessary.

If You Need Support, Seek Out a Therapist in Nashville, TN

Sometimes we need a little extra help to strengthen our relationships, and that's okay. There are plenty of resources available, including online therapy in Nashville, TN. Don't be afraid to reach out and seek support if you need it. Remember, investing in your relationship now can save you from heartache and regret later on. So, make date night a priority and continue to put in the effort to build a strong, lasting relationship with your significant other.

Navigating the Southern Culture of Drinking with Addiction Therapy in Nashville, TN

It's no secret that Southern culture often revolves around drinking. Whether it’s an after-work beer, socializing at a bar, or gathering for a good old-fashioned whiskey distillery tour, alcohol is deeply entrenched in the South. For many people, this part of the culture can be fun and enjoyable as long as it’s enjoyed responsibly.

However, for those struggling with addiction, this aspect of the Southern culture can be dangerous and even fatal. Alcohol is one of the most accessible drugs in society, making it an easy gateway to harder illicit drugs or exacerbating existing addictions. In addition, alcohol has a tendency to lower inhibitions and create chaotic environments that may trigger traumatic events or memories with ease.

The Cowboy Image Might Be Cool, but It's Not Good for Your Health

Shows a person holding a flask and dressed as a cowboy. Represents how a therapist in nashville, tn can support you through addiction therapy in nashville, tn.

The image of a rugged “cowboy” who can handle their liquor and never gets into trouble is often perpetuated by media and pop culture. Or, when they do get into trouble they are regarded as "bad boys" or as being rebellious. This might be cool in the moment, but it’s not fun or good for your health in the long run. This image can be a slippery slope for those struggling with alcohol or substance abuse issues. It can also be the beginning of an addiction if you depend on alcohol to get through a difficult situation.

Let's be real, whiskey and other hard liquors are not good for you. In Nashville, TN whiskey is everywhere, but it is important to note that there are healthier options such as red wine for your heart or a beer. When drinking, especially hard liquor, you can put yourself in very traumatizing situations such as getting into a fight, being arrested for a DUI, or even worse, leaving you in a place of physical, emotional, and mental distress which can cause more issues.

Trauma and Drinking Go Hand in Hand

The traumatic experiences that come with drinking can be overwhelming and can lead to a cycle of addiction. In many families, generations go by without learning new coping methods or strategies for dealing with stress, anxiety, and depression. This is especially the case in rural areas where access to mental health care might not exist or people may feel too ashamed to seek help.

Plus, Southern stereotypes of men and women don’t always coincide with getting help. It perpetuates Southern individuals as strong, resilient people who don’t need help and instead just need to “buck up” or “get over it.” This isn't true. This only adds to the stigma associated with addiction, making it difficult for people to seek the treatment they need. It's important to talk about our problems and flaws instead of hiding them away in a bottle.

Breaking the Generational Trauma Aspect of Southern Culture and Drinking

Shows a family harvesting tomatoes. Represents how addiction treatment in nashville, tn can support your family with addiction and trauma with the help of a therapist in nashville, tn.

Unfortunately, between the stereotypes and the generations of families with drinking problems, many people have become trapped in a cycle of addiction. It can be difficult to break away from this cycle once it has been established. From drinking for fun and to getting drunk, drinking a lot of beer, hard liquor, or even drinking to excess, all these factors feed into a regression of self that will hold you back from getting better and growing.

This can lead to individuals finding themselves dysfunctional, depressed, and even further traumatized, which perpetuates the same cycle of drinking and the same results. It's not easy to break away from this kind of behavior, but it is possible with the help of a therapist in Nashville, TN who specializes in addiction recovery. With their help, individuals can begin to find healthier ways of dealing with stress and trauma that don't involve drinking or using substances.

The goal is to Break the Cycle of Generational Trauma and Drinking that has Been Passed Down for Years.

Generations of families, individuals, and Southern populations may have not advanced in their coping mechanisms over time. However, there are resources available that can help them to not only break the cycle of substance abuse but find new and healthier ways to cope with life’s stressors. Alcohol may be the easiest drug to access and the most accepted, but it can also lead to more addictions and bigger problems down the line if you don’t get help.

Finding Sobriety in Music City: Navigating Addiction Therapy in Nashville, TN

You live in Nashville, TN where music, entertainment, and good times are the norm. However, even though it's deemed as Music City, most tourists come to town seeking a vibrant party atmosphere. If you are one of the many individuals in recovery, it can be overwhelming to navigate the nightlife scene without succumbing to temptation.

When you were younger living in Nashville, or when you first moved, it wasn't always the party destination that it is today. The downtown and Broadway areas are magnets for bachelor/bachelorette parties, birthday celebrations, and more that all involve heavy drinking. It can be hard to stay sober in this part of the city. However, this doesn't mean you have to give up your healthy nightlife activities just because you don't drink anymore.

Avoidance is sometimes necessary

Shows food from Nashville. Represents how a therapist in Nashville, TN can support you through addiction treatment in nashville, tn.

When you are actively in recovery or still find yourself struggling, it may be best to avoid the Broadway area or any venue that encourages heavy drinking. There are so many activities in Nashville that allow for fun without the need to drink. Enjoy local restaurants, live music venues, comedy clubs, and more all without having a drink in hand.

Now, if you are an individual who is recovered and trying to show yourself that you can still navigate Music City without drinking, you may want to avoid places that may be too triggering. An example of this might be a honky-tonk bar where music is a part of it but is mostly known for its drinking.

Have a Plan When You Go Out

Part of the challenge for individuals in recovery is to find a way to enjoy themselves without drinking, especially in Nashville where there are bars, restaurants, and other venues everywhere that serve alcohol. The key is to have a plan before you go out. This may seem counterintuitive but it can actually be empowering to have a plan.

If you're going out with friends, consider having a designated driver who will not drink any alcohol. Or, volunteer to be the designated driver. You can then have a sober friend to support you but also have fun with your group if you are the sober friend who is expected to keep an eye on your other friends. This way, you don't feel the peer pressure to drink and can focus on enjoying yourself all without the distraction of worrying about whether or not someone is going to offer you a drink.

When in Doubt Find an Alternative

If you don't have someone available to be sober with you or you are not able to/don't want to drive, then look for alternative venues such as ones that offer alcohol but maybe have less of an emphasis on drinking. For example, many restaurants and bars in Nashville have a live music aspect to them. This gives you an opportunity to still enjoy the nightlife scene without having alcohol as the main focus of your evening.

Avoid Peer Pressure When the Party Season Hits

Shows a party bike in Nashville. Represents how a therapist in Nashville, TN may recommend addiction treatment in nashville, tn and avoiding Broadway.

The holidays and summer months in Nashville bring with them a whole host of increased events, such as bachelor/bachelorette parties, 4th of July fireworks shows, holiday celebrations, etc. These can all be great events to attend, but they also come with an increase in peer pressure to drink or more generally partake in activities that may not be healthy for your recovery. When bachelor or bachelorette parties are in town, usually they are there to party to the extreme. While this is not always the case, alcohol is typically the main focus of these events.

If you do choose to go out during these periods, it's best to avoid places where drinking is the main focus, such as bars, honky-tonk style restaurants, and other venues that are known for their alcohol consumption and partying. If you do go, once again, having a plan in place and knowing when to call it a night can come in handy. You may also want to stay away from downtown or Broadway if you know that these activities are going on. Not only can they be difficult to your recovery, but there is an increase in people and traffic which can be overwhelming.

Lean On Your Support System

Navigating the party and nightlife scene in Nashville can be challenging for individuals in recovery. When the city's nightlife sleeps, there are so many opportunities to enjoy the city without alcohol from museums to live entertainment and food trucks there is something for everyone.

However, this doesn't mean there isn't temptation everywhere you turn. To help keep yourself on track and maintain your sobriety, it's important to lean on your support system. This can mean having a sponsor or addiction therapist in Nashville, TN who can provide the guidance and accountability that will help you stay on track. Having people around you who understand your struggle and will support you through it can make a big difference when it comes to staying sober.

If You're Still Struggling

Shows a person in addiction therapy in nashville, tn. Represents how a therapist in Nashville, TN will support you on your journey to sobriety.

If you are still struggling to stay sober in this environment, then it is important to seek help. It may be difficult to admit that you need addiction therapy and treatment, but it can be invaluable for your recovery process and ultimately, your long-term sobriety. Addiction therapy and addiction treatment in Nashville, TN provide a safe space where individuals can get the support they need.

When you work with an addiction therapist in Nashville, TN, they will be able to provide you with the tools and skills that will help you stay sober. You'll also be able to discuss any triggers or challenges you are facing, which can in turn give you a better understanding of your addiction and what is causing it. It can be hard to stay sober if you don't know your triggers and how to cope with them effectively. With the support of an addiction therapist, a sponsor, or even AA meetings, you can develop a game plan for staying sober and finding more fulfillment in life without the use of drugs or alcohol.

Navigate the Nightlife in Music City With Addiction Therapy in Nashville, TN

Navigating the nightlife scene in Nashville can be a challenge for individuals in recovery. However, if you have a plan and are surrounded by supportive people, it is possible to still enjoy the city without the need for drinking or drug use. Make sure to avoid places that may trigger intense cravings and instead stick to venues where alcohol isn't the main focus. Addiction therapy in Nashville, TN can be a great way to get the support and guidance you need to stay on track. Enhancing Your Relationship: Date Night Tips from a Couples Counselor in Nashville, TN

Date night is a great opportunity for you and your partner to connect and enhance your relationship. From enjoying an activity or space that you both enjoy to talking about deeper topics like your hopes and dreams for the future, date night in Nashville, TN can be a great time to strengthen your bond and develop a stronger connection with your partner.

However, it can be difficult to fully take advantage of date night if you don’t know what to do or how to make the most out of it. For example, you and your partner have a hard time keeping the conversation going or you don’t know how to transition into important topics. To help, here are some tips from a couples counselor in Nashville, TN.

This Time is for the Two of You

Shows a couple on a date. Represents how working with a couples counselor in nashville, tn can support couples in doing a date night in nashville, tn.

When it comes to date night, make sure you and your partner are focused on each other. That means really guarding your phones and putting them away. No checking emails or scrolling through social media. This time is for the two of you and that’s it! Emails can wait until you get home or when you get to work tomorrow. Social media? It'll still be there once your date is over.

Taking this time to fully pay attention to your partner can help enhance your relationship, making it much more meaningful. It's incredible what small gestures like taking the time to really listen, being genuinely interested in what the other has to say, and expressing gratitude, fondness, and admiration for one another can do for the dynamics of a relationship. It shows that you really care about your partner and want to make sure they know it.

Express Your Feelings

When it comes to sharing your feelings with your partner, it can be difficult for many people. Being vulnerable can be scary — but it's also a necessary step in the process of connecting with each other. Showing your partner that you are willing to open up and share more about yourself will help them feel safe and comfortable in doing the same with you.

Express how much you appreciate and love your partner. Talk about the small things, like how much you love their laugh or how they bring out the best in you. As a couples counselor in Nashville, TN, I recommend expressing your feelings and showing your love for one another in any way you can. By doing this, you are creating an atmosphere of trust and intimacy in your relationship.

Ask Open Ended Questions

Shows a couple talking on a couch. Represents how couples counseling in nashville, tn can help couples to communicate better. Search for a "couples counselor in nashville, tn" today!

When you’re out on a date night, asking open-ended questions can be one of the best ways to get the conversation going. Open-ended questions don’t just lead to yes or no answers; they allow you and your partner to really dive deep into a topic and share more about yourselves with one another. For example, you can ask “What’s something you’ve been wanting to do but haven’t yet?” or “Who was your favorite teacher growing up?”

You can also find more ideas from the Gottman Card Deck app, which has a variety of thought-provoking cards and prompts that are perfect for date night. They can help you and your partner learn more about each other and enhance your connection. Maybe you'll learn something new about them that you never knew!

Love Maps

Building the foundation of a solid relationship is all about developing and understanding your partner’s “love map” — their background, interests, experiences, values, and so on. Knowing what’s going on in each other’s lives can help you build trust in your relationship and feel closer to one another. Making it a point to learn more about each other is important- even if you’ve been together for a long time.

Make sure you’re up-to-date on the little details. These can be things like favorite foods or memories that they cherish from childhood as well as the bigger things like career plans or dreams for the future. This will help create an emotional bank account that you can both withdraw from when times are tough; you don't want to be caught up in the moment only to find out you know nothing about your partner, your family, or your life.

Positive Experiences

Shows a couple watching a movie with popcorn. Represents how couples counseling in nashville, tn recommends creating positive experiences to look back on. Search for a "couples counselor in nashville, tn" to learn more!

Finally, make sure you’re creating positive experiences on date night that will help add to your emotional bank account. Tough times are inevitable but having many positive memories to look back on can help keep the balance in your relationship. So, don’t be afraid to ask each other fun questions, laugh and make jokes together or share stories from when you first met.

Plus, it helps to strengthen the bond between you and your partner. Enjoying happy moments together will help you remember why your relationship is worth fighting for. Date night in Nashville, TN can be an amazing opportunity to connect with each other and enhance your relationship. You can bond over shared interests and activities, talk about your feelings and get to know each other more.

If you and your partner are looking for more help in your relationship, couples counseling in Nashville, TN may be a great option. A qualified couples counselor can provide insight into your emotions and feelings as well as give advice on how to communicate better with each other. They can also help you work through any underlying issues you may have that could be negatively impacting your relationship. Or, they can help you figure out the best places for a romantic date night in Nashville, TN. Whatever it is you’re looking for in your relationship, make sure to take advantage of the opportunities that date night brings.

Summer FOMO and Depression: Understanding the Mental Health Connection

Summer is a time when a good portion of people go on vacation, gather with friends, and otherwise have a good time. For those of us who are stuck at home, it can lead to summer FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). Sometimes, we don't have the money, the time, or the childcare to be able to join in the fun. However, FOMO isn't normally a big deal; it's just a feeling. But when you add in depression or anxiety, FOMO can spiral out of control.

The feeling of being left out and inadequate can heighten in the summer due to, you guessed it, social media. All of the happy posts, beach pictures, and vacation memories can make you feel even worse about yourself and your current situation. It's like playing a game of compare and despair. The more you look, the worse it gets. So, how do FOMO and depression collide?

For some, the Depression is Already There and Summer FOMO Just Makes it Worse.

Shows someone putting their head on their bed due to being tired. Represents how a depression therapist in nashville, tn will support them in combatting summer SAD. In person or via online therapy nashville!

Perhaps, you already struggle with depression or you're one of the individuals who experiences SAD in the summer. Summer FOMO can amplify those depressive symptoms. If you're already feeling as if you don't want to leave the house or you can't find the energy to do anything, summer FOMO can add fuel to that fire. You're feeling as if your friends are off having the time of their lives, while you're stuck at home. Your depression could be telling you false stories, like you'll never be able to go on vacation or everyone will forget about you. Then you see the pictures on social media? To your brain, this confirms those negative beliefs.

Other individuals may already be anxious, especially if they are introverted or are feeling overwhelmed with work and children. Speaking to your friends about what they're doing can make it worse. They're telling you all about their fabulous trips and you can't help but feel left behind in comparison. You're struggling with your anxiety and depression, and now? You feel like you can't measure up. You're left looking at their pictures, wondering why you can't have a break too.

For Others, Summer FOMO can Lead to the Onset of Depression

Shows someone on their phone in bed. Represents how online therapy nashville can support individuals with doomscrolling that adds to their depression. Learn more about depression therapy in nashville, tn today!

It's always hard when you feel like you can't do something because it's too expensive or you don't have childcare. But when you see others doing it, it can make the feeling of missing out even worse. It can also cause you to spiral into negative thinking and thoughts of inadequacy. This can make you feel like you're not working hard enough, not contributing enough, or not providing your family with the best life possible.

Summer FOMO has the power to make us feel inadequate and lonely. Technology doesn't exactly help with that either. If you're doomscrolling and on your phone all the time, it's not going to make you feel any better about yourself. Now, don't get me wrong, technology can be beneficial. It can allow us to connect with our friends and family, but it can also make us feel isolated. It can lead to the dreaded doom-scrolling and a feeling of being left out. When you keep seeing everyone in their vacation pictures, it can bring up a lot of negative feelings.

So, What Do You Do?

Shows someone going on a hike with their dog. Represents how a depression therapist in nashville, tn might suggest doing activities that make you happy to overcome summer FOMO. Learn more about depression therapy in nashville, tn at Vitus Counseling

FOMO and depression can lead to a slippery slope of downward thinking. It's hard enough when you're stuck inside, but it can be even worse when you feel like everyone else is out having a good time. The key to overcoming summer FOMO and depression is to find a way to do something for yourself. Whether it's taking up a hobby, reading books, or having virtual hangouts with friends, you need to find the time to "do you".

Just like your friends who are on their vacations, spend time doing what makes you happy. It doesn't matter if it's as grand as a beach getaway, or something smaller like choosing to take your lunch break outside. Anything you can do to make yourself feel more fulfilled and confident will go a long way. Want to go swimming but can't afford a trip to Cancun? Take your family to the nearest lake or pool and make your own fun. Are you looking at pictures of your friends having a grand time in Europe? Think of what you would want to do, if money and travel were not an issue. Then find something that you can do with the resources and means that you do have.

The most important thing to remember is that we all experience FOMO differently. Your friends may be on vacation, but they may see you at home with your kids or working hard and wish they could have that. Comparison is the thief of joy, so try to focus on what you have instead of feeling envious of what others have. Summer FOMO and depression can be difficult to deal with, but if you find time for yourself, it will make all the difference.

Is It Just Summertime Sadness? Seasonal Depression and Summertime Blues

Summer is a time of relaxation and is known to be a break for a lot of people and their families from school. And a break from getting your kids from school-see you next school year pick-up queue. Or if you're a teacher, from a busy school year. The warm weather, beaches, and BBQs make it seem like the perfect time to have fun, but for some people, summer is not really a break.

Adults, even teachers, are still paying bills, taking care of things, and doing all the same stuff they did during the school year — but now with kids around. It can be wonderful having your kids around and spending quality time with them, but it's also exhausting and can leave you feeling run down. All that extra responsibility can be hard to manage. Leaving some adults and parents feeling exhausted, irritable, and just plain run down.

Seasonal Depression? In the Summer?

Shows a person holding their head while sitting in a chair. Represents how a depression therapist in nashville, tn can support people going through SAD in the summer. Learn more about working with a depression therapist in nashville, tn today!

Seasonal Depression isn't just reserved for the wintertime. Some people are more prone to SAD in the summertime, called ‘summer depression’. This doesn't mean that summer is always a depressing time for everyone- it's just that the energy, heat, and daylight can contribute to a person’s low mood. Some people feel overwhelmed by the brightness of the summertime days, look at HSPs. Others can be more sensitive to temperatures and when the sun is especially strong, they can feel more fatigued.

Other times, people do just experience the summertime blues. Where the combination of heat, humidity, and their regular day-to-day tasks can all add up to feeling a bit 'blah'. This is different from Seasonal Affective Disorder in that it’s not a diagnosable condition and people don't really experience an ongoing low mood. Rather it is a brief spell of 'meh' feelings or just feeling run down in general. But when you're experiencing it, you feel like it's never going to end.

The Heat Doesn't Help Either Condition

In the winter, the darkness is the factor that can worsen depression. But for those living in parts of the country that are hot and humid, seasonal depression can still be a factor. It can deplete your energy and make it hard to stay motivated. Plus you’re stuck inside a lot more due to the heat, which can really add to feelings of listlessness.

This can lead to increased boredom- you've just been stuck inside for a whole season! Now you're still stuck inside but this time it's because of the hot weather. It can evolve into depression if you're not proactive about it.

Social Media: A Blessing and a Curse

Shows a woman waking up. Represents how depression therapy in nashville, tn can support parents feeling overwhelmed in the summertime. Online therapy nashville can be a great alternative to in-person depression therapy!

Social media can be both a blessing and a curse when it comes to summertime sadness. It can give you a source of entertainment with endless funny videos and memes. Especially on really hot days when you don't want to leave the air conditioning. But it can also make you feel as if you're missing out on all the fun that everyone else is having. Social media, especially when people use filters, can make it look like people look perfect while traveling to cool places all summer.

Our brains then want to see more of this and so before you know it, we can find ourselves doomscrolling- scrolling through post after post. Of what appears to be people living their best life while we're stuck at home. This leads to depression, FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), and the pressure that every day you have to be doing something fun. All of this can make you feel as if you are not living your best life and lead to depression.

Take Time For Self-Care

The summer can make you feel pressured to jam-pack your schedule with all the fun activities you can do during this time. From activities at home that you got off of TikTok to traveling, it can be overwhelming. Especially, when the purpose is to entertain your children. And all that extra responsibility can be hard to manage. So, making sure you take time for yourself is essential.

This can look so many ways as self-care looks different for every person. It could be taking a nap when your spouse is on watch or taking a quick walk around the block for fresh air. It can be stopping for coffee or your favorite smoothie when you're out running errands. Or it can be seeking support from a depression therapist in Nashville, TN at Vitus Counseling. Whatever it is, just make sure you take a second to yourself and do something that's going to help you relax and feel better. Even just taking 5 minutes to yourself a day to sit in silence or get lost in the music. Taking these small steps can go a long way.

The summertime sadness or blues can be tough to manage when summer has a reputation to be the most fun and the best time of year. Yet you're feeling indifferent or down. It can be even more complicated if you're struggling with seasonal depression and you wanted to make the most of this summer. Whether it's seasonal depression or just the blues, don’t forget to take time for yourself and practice self-care. Also, seek depression therapy in Nashville, TN if you don’t think you can do this alone. Don't forget to take a break and relax, even if it's just for five minutes. Everyone deserves to enjoy their summertime. So, take this summer one day at a time, and don't forget to take care of yourself.

Finding the Right Therapist as a Couple Dealing With Anxiety in Nashville

Couples enter relationships never suspecting that anxiety will become an issue. Usually, when anyone thinks of anxiety, it's an individual issue, not something that can affect an entire marriage. But it can be, and it affects many couples. It can make couples feel as if one partner is too controlling or that the other partner isn't paying attention to them, and this can lead to a lack of trust and resentment within the relationship.

Finding the Right Couples Therapist Can Help Tremendously

That's why finding the right therapist for your relationship can greatly help in managing anxiety.  Just like in any other city, Nashville has various therapists available who can be a great help to couples facing anxiety. But, how do you find the right one? In this blog, we will discuss some tips for finding the right marriage counselor in Nashville or anxiety therapist in Nashville, TN, as both can help lessen the anxiety in marriage and possibly restore it to what it used to be.

How Does Anxiety Impact a Couple's Relationship or Marriage?

Just like constant conflict, anxiety can cause an immense amount of tension in a marriage. It causes partners to not see eye to eye, especially if only one partner has anxiety or if both partners’ anxiety manifests in different ways. Anxiety can contribute to a sense of chaos as it can cause problems in communication, decision-making, and more. One partner may feel anxious when it comes to conflict and the other partner may feel anxious when it comes to taking risks or making decisions.

Anxiety Can Lead to Avoidance

This can lead to avoidance when it comes to tackling tough issues or it can make the couple feel like they're stuck in a cycle of arguing, which is why it can be a huge predictor of marital instability and divorce. When anxiety is not managed, there can become too much of it in a marriage, and this can lead to flooding, which is when both partners become overwhelmed with anxiety and the marriage starts to feel out of control. In the end, couples are left with a lack of confidence in the marriage and negative thoughts and feelings about the marriage.

What Can a Marriage Counselor or Anxiety Therapist in Nashville, TN Do?

When a couple seeks support from either a marriage counselor or even an anxiety therapist, they will be able to learn more about anxiety. The counselor or therapist will use psychoeducation to help the couple learn more about what anxiety is and how it impacts the marriage. They will also be able to teach the couple coping skills as well as help them uncover what triggers the anxiety in their marriage.

A Safe Space to Communicate

As a couple, they will also have this space to safely talk about anxiety and its impact on the relationship. Each partner will be able to discuss their personal feelings and experiences with anxiety as it relates to the marriage. This will help create better understanding between both partners, which can help them create more effective coping strategies, build trust and strengthen the relationship.

Where Can Couples Find a Marriage Counselor or Anxiety Therapist in Nashville, TN?

There are various ways one can find a marriage counselor or anxiety therapist in Nashville, TN. Or, if you live outside of Nashville, many therapists are open to offering virtual sessions as well. As you may have guessed, looking on Google is a great way to see what counselors or therapists are near you along with what kind of services they offer. There are other online directories such as Psychology Today, TherapyDen, and even websites like the Gottman Institute or ICEEFT that offer certified marriage therapists who specialize in helping couples with anxiety.

Asking For Referrals Can be Helpful

Also, even asking friends, family, and coworkers for referrals can be helpful. Ultimately, the best way to find the right marriage counselor or anxiety therapist is to try different ones. This may seem overwhelming but it's the best way to find a great fit. Therapists will understand as they want to ensure the best results for you and your marriage as well.

What Can Couples Do to Help Deal With Anxiety Right Now?

Anxiety is overwhelming and finding the right therapist can sometimes take time. In the meantime, here are a few tips that you can do to help deal with anxiety in your marriage:

  • Find ways to soothe yourself when flooded, such as biofeedback or diaphragmatic breathing.

  • Read "Why Marriages Succeed or Fail" by John Gottman

  • Read "Hold Me Tight" by Sue Johnson

Couples Therapy Can Set You up for Long-Term Success

Ultimately, seeking support to address the anxiety in your marriage is essential for long-term success. Remember that you and your partner are in this together, and with the right therapist, you can find a way to work through the anxiety and have a healthier marriage. Anxiety doesn't have to be a deal breaker in your relationship; it can be managed and you can find ways to rebuild trust.

Navigating Anxiety in Nashville: Coping Strategies for Young Adults

Young adults are at the stage of life where they are developing their own identities. They are also beginning to navigate the complexities of the world. From college to starting a career, to beginning a family, there is a lot of reward that comes with this but also a lot of stress and anxiety as well. Unfortunately, young adults are often overwhelmed by the demands of life and find themselves dealing with high levels of anxiety.

It doesn't help that most forms of communication are through digital media. This can make it difficult to fully connect with people. It can also contribute to anxiety when people are bombarded with images of “perfect lifestyles” or expectations that may be difficult to live up to. So, in this blog, we will discuss how to manage anxiety in Nashville and provide coping strategies for young adults.

A group of college students walk together to their next class. Young adults face distinct challenges that can cause anxiety. Working with an Anxiety Therapist during Therapy for Anxiety in Nashville, TN can help.

What Exactly is Anxiety?

There are many ways you can describe anxiety. It can be the feeling of dread the night before a big exam or the dread of an unknown future. Anxiety can be a feeling of unease when put in uncomfortable or unfamiliar situations. Or it can also be a physical state of negativity with increased apprehension and worry.

The way I would describe it as an anxiety therapist in Nashville, TN is it is both a mental and physical state of negativity. Mentally there is increased apprehension and worry, and physically there is distressing activation of the body all to drive this response to an unknown danger, whether it is real like losing a job, or imagined like being judged by your peers.

How Does Anxiety Impact Young Adults in Nashville and Beyond?

Anxiety impacts young adults in many unique ways because each individual is different. Even though they are dealing with so many first-time stressors such as their first job, their first mortgage, or marriage, the way they cope with these stressors can be very different. It can make these young adults feel overwhelmed, "keyed up" and exhausted, all while trying to figure out their identity.

In fact, if they are experiencing too much anxiety and stress, it can overwhelm their nervous system. This can lead individuals to eventually crash into a major depression and can feel like they have no hope and no way out. Hence, why it's a great idea to find ways that work for you to manage and cope with your anxiety.

What are Ways For Young Adults to Cope with Anxiety?

Finding ways that work for you to cope with your anxiety is not only beneficial for your mental health but also helps to get your life back on track. Here are some strategies I recommend to my clients in Nashville, TN:

Manage and Keep Your Expectations Realistic

When you're struggling with anxiety, creating expectations that are not obtainable will only increase that anxiety. For example, if you are setting a goal to go from a 2.0 GPA to a 4.0 GPA in one semester, that is most likely not achievable. It's okay to have high expectations for yourself but make sure that they are realistic! Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to manage and build on expectations can be really helpful.

CBT helps with managing expectations by breaking them down into smaller, more achievable goals. This can help to reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed and focus on what is manageable. For example, instead of jumping for a 4.0 GPA, breaking it down into monthly goals of studying more or getting help from a tutor can be much more achievable. Just make sure you don't overdo it with your schedule. Remember to take breaks and give yourself grace!

Mindful Breathing and Detaching From Negative Thoughts

Anxiety can cause your nervous system to go haywire as it thinks there is an immediate threat. Mindful breathing helps lower your anxiety by having you focus on the present moment. The idea is to focus on the movement of your breath and block out any negative thoughts that are coming up. You can do this anywhere, which makes it such a great coping skill.

Another coping skill that I recommend to my clients is to use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to detach from their negative thoughts. ACT helps you to detach from your negative thoughts by labeling them as “just thoughts”. This helps to reduce your attachment to the thought and neutralize it, eventually reducing the anxiety that it may have caused.

Keep Good Boundaries with Social Media

Social media can be a great way to connect and keep up with family and friends, or to stay informed on the latest news. But it can also be a source of anxiety if you are constantly comparing yourself to others or seeing images that don't make you feel good about yourself. Implementing boundaries such as screen time, social media detoxes, or even unfollowing accounts that make you feel anxious can be really helpful.

Doom scrolling is a likely culprit of increased anxiety, so be mindful of how much social media you are consuming. Make sure to take time to connect with your friends and family in the real world.

Spend Time Outside in Nature

Nature and Vitamin D have been known to help relieve stress and anxiety. Taking walks in parks, going for a hike, reading outside, or just taking in the fresh air can help to reduce stress and anxiety levels. When clients ask me for recommendations, I usually recommend Edwin and Percy Warner Park, Radnor Lake State Park, or Shelby Bottoms Greenway. These parks are beautiful and a great way to relax and enjoy nature.

Another way to ensure you get outside time is to combine it with your exercise routine. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety by releasing endorphins, hormones that help to improve your mood. This could be going for a jog, a walk around the park, or even swimming.

Joyous But Overwhelming Firsts

Overall, young adults are at the point in their lives where there are a lot of joyous firsts happening, but these firsts can come with a lot of stress and anxiety. It's important to recognize the signs of increased anxiety in order to take steps toward managing it. Also, finding coping mechanisms that work for you will help to keep your anxiety levels in check. Remember to be gentle with yourself.

5 Date Night Ideas in Nashville

Finding opportunities to reconnect with your partner can seem hard to do with work, kids, and the hustle of everyday life. Being connected with your partner is important for a relationship to thrive, and adults are really just big children who grew up and then forgot how to have a good time. Date night is the perfect way to put aside all of life’s responsibilities and focus on each other. As a counselor at Vitus Counseling, I understand the need to make a concerted effort to reconnect with your partner regularly. A street in Nashville lined with signs representing the many places to hang out in the city. Reconnect with your partner with a date night in Nashville, TN.

A Crucial Point of Connection for Your Relationship

Date night is a crucial ritual of connection that couples need to maintain their emotional health and intimacy. Just like how families need the ritual of connection that comes in the form of family dinners. It gives couples an outlet to get out and have fun. Research shows that emotional withdrawal and disengagement are much larger predictive factors in divorce than fighting is. Date nights help to combat this by providing an opportunity to nurture your relationship and build positive affect and memories that will protect and strengthen the marriage.

They Are Not a Cure-All But They Definitely Go a Long Way.

It can seem difficult to have weekly check-ins when you and your partner are so wrapped up in work, family, and the daily grind. Date night is the perfect time to check in with each other, talk about the week that was, and discuss what needs to happen in the upcoming week. It can help you and your partner stay on the same page in your marriage, parenting, and household management. Which ultimately, reduces the stress and negative affect in your relationship.

Depression is a serious and difficult concern that can have a huge impact on the health and wellness of one or both spouses in a marriage. However, there is a stigma around talking about mental health in a relationship. Or, at least how it affects it.

There have been marriages that have struggled and fallen apart that didn't have to due to depression where if the spouse who was suffering from depression had received treatment and the other spouse received psychoeducation on how to support their loved one, the marriage may have survived. In this blog, we will talk about how marriage counseling can be an opportunity to address depression in the marriage and its effects in a safe environment.

Marriage Counseling can Help Make the Marriage Stronger

Shows a married couple holding hands. Symbolizes how working with a therapist in brentwood, tn on your marriage and on depression can strengthen your marriage with your spouse.

I think we need to first address the reality that no one gets married to ruin their marriage or ruin another person's life. Depression is a heavy-hitting mental health concern that can affect everyone in the marriage or even the family. No individual is going to be able to handle all the challenges of a mental health concern on their own nor are they going to choose to inflict it on their spouse or family.

Marriage counseling can help to make a marriage stronger all before a marriage breaks down from the impacts of depression. The marriage and the spouses become more adaptable due to receiving support from a marriage counselor in Brentwood, TN. Spouses learn how to manage stressors, triggers, or any concerns moving forward; this way one spouse isn’t left with the burden of trying to manage a mental health concern within the marriage.

THE Cognitive Behavioral People Are Right

Events and stressors can lead up to a depressive episode, but the cognitive behavioral people (therapists, counselors, psychiatrists, etc.) are right when they say that it's more than that; it's also the individual's thought patterns, their history, their genetic risk for mental health struggle, and so much more that can contribute to their developing a depressive illness. For example, if mental health struggles run in the family, then they can strike at any time. And this happens.

However, these depressive episodes provide challenges for not only you but also for those around you. Those who you love and care about you. Marriage counseling can address all of this within the scope of the marriage and how depression can negatively affect it. It allows spouses to open up and honestly talk about the depression, how it's affecting them personally, but also how to move forward. But with time, proper care, individual therapy, and possibly medication, you can be okay. That's how your marriage can be with the help of a marriage counselor.

Breaking Away From the Stigma

When these couples have a place to go to express their feelings, emotions, and concerns surrounding depression, it can be easier for them to work and break through the stigma. The stigma associated with divorce, mental health, and relationships can drive spouses to not address things like depression in marriage counseling.

But what better place could there be to talk about this issue? Counseling is a place where you can talk to a skilled listener who understands your concerns surrounding your spouse's depression. Your marriage counselor also understands the circumstances and the ingredients that make for a supportive and healthy marriage. They get it. Your counselor will help you and give both you and your spouse support. So don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

A Space of Understanding

Marriage counseling is a space where you can go if you and your spouse are struggling. One way it can help is if you or your spouse's depression stems from manic/depressive cycles. If it does, knowing how their mood cycle works can help. It can help to know how to identify their triggers and how to best manage them in a safe environment.

This information can help you or your spouse know how best to help you or the other through an episode and help you both be able to recognize potential episodes before they occur.

Talking openly about depression can be a difficult task, but marriage counseling can be a safe space to have these discussions.

Counseling also Provides a Place for Vulnerability

Men can have trouble being vulnerable due to societal expectations that they always need to be strong and always in control. Counseling is a place where they don't have to uphold these expectations. Men can be vulnerable about their depression and how they feel in regards to it and their marriage.

Women, on the other hand, are hardwired from birth to talk about their feelings and can be open and obvious about having depression. Men often can't or don't. Instead, they will turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as working out for 3 hours at the gym every day or working around the clock while they avoid their feelings and neglect their families. Through marriage counseling men and women both can have a space to be vulnerable and open about their feelings, concerns and hopes for their marriage.

The Impact of Depression on Marital Relationships

When your spouse is affected by depression, or you yourself are struggling with this, this can take a toll on your marriage. This can seem unfair due to your spouse, or you, not asking or willing for this to happen, yet it can still occur. The problem is that with your spouse this isn't someone you talk to once in a blue moon. This is someone you are doing life with and who you rely upon to help with chores, to talk, and to provide companionship. So, if that person can't perform their duty due to depression it can be a heavy burden on their partner.

When you or your partner are feeling unmotivated or foggy to the point where you're leaving them feeling abandoned or left with the whole workload of the house, it can be overwhelming. It can take small chips at your marriage and over time can cut deep into the foundation. So, in this blog, we are going to talk about how depression can affect marriage and what can be done to help.

Depression Comes in Many Forms

Shows a man going back to sleep and turning his alarm off. Represents how a depression therapist brentwood can help you navigate the symptoms of depression.

Depression is often thought of as one state of emotion, yet there is a spectrum of depression from mild to chronic forms. You or your partner may be struggling with the blues or SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), and even though this is not as intense as major depression, it can still cause challenges in the marriage. It can cause you to not be able to get out of bed, think clearly, or move about as quickly as you normally would. Even if this has only been going on for a few weeks, it can take a toll, especially in a 21st-century marriage.

When struggling with depression, everything can sometimes slow down. From your movement to your speech. If you're someone with a career, family, kids, and other duties, your partner is going to feel the brunt of it. Do your kids need something right now? You're not able to give it due to you moving slower and not feeling as motivated, and this can cause tension in the marriage. Does your partner need you to talk? You can't because of the fog in your brain. So, the problem goes unaddressed and can cause more problems down the road.

Severe Depression Affects More than Motivation

Now, if you or your partner are experiencing MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) or Bipolar Disorder, then this can be even more difficult for both of you. Severe depression affects motivation and certain functions, but it can also cause other issues that can be of concern such as a lack of interest in sex, loss of appetite, or suicidal thoughts. This can lead to the partner feeling helpless, scared, angry, and resentful.

However, the negative emotions don't help the partner struggling with depression. It can make them feel guilty, angry, and disheartened about the situation. Nor does it help your marriage. In this case, seeking support from a therapist can be beneficial for both parties. Even considering inpatient hospitalization and medication can be necessary to help your partner get the support they need. Also, it can help prevent negative emotions from festering and making matters worse.

What Can You Do To Help?

It can be difficult when there are issues in your marriage that are due to depression. It can cause a breakdown in the relationship. It can also come with resentment from the partner who has to take on more responsibility than they normally would. Some of the things you can do to help your partner are:

Show Understanding and Patience

Your partner is going through a difficult time and is needing support. You're their life partner, their best friend, and their biggest supporter. Show them understanding and patience as they navigate this journey. Listen to them as they talk, and provide a safe place for them to express their emotions.

Also, show them patience and understanding when they can't always respond as quickly or in the same way as you do. More than likely, they feel guilty for not being able to, and they'll need your reassurance that it's ok.

Encourage Your Partner To Seek Professional Help

Depression can be difficult to struggle through alone without a depression therapist or a psychologist. Depression is also contagious, and if your partner is still struggling after a few weeks, it can start to affect you and the rest of the family. Encourage your partner to seek professional help as soon as possible.

This way they will be able to gain the tools they need to cope with their depression and learn how it is affecting them along with your marriage. By going to therapy, your partner can get the support they need along with individualized care and coping mechanisms.

Offer Reassurances

Often, depression can make individuals feel isolated or that they are alone in their struggle. Let your partner know that they aren't alone. Let them know that you are there to support them and that you care about them deeply. Reassurances like this can help your partner feel more secure and safe in your marriage.

Giving them these small reassurances can help them feel validated and accepted. This can also help with the communication issues that may arise due to depression. It also shows them that you can and will still support them even when they are not at their best.

Go to Marriage Counseling Together

Marriage is one of the most interactive and communicative relationships that you're going to have in this life. The number and type of interactions you have in marriage are different than you would have with a friend, your mailman, or even a colleague. Depression can make it harder to communicate and cause the communication to break down, or even stop altogether.

However, Marriage Counseling in Brentwood, TN Can Be a Great Way to Help Both You and Your Partner.

It will help you with understanding depression, its effects on the marriage, and how to best work together as a team. Together, you and your partner will work with your marriage counselor in Brentwood, TN to improve your communication, set healthy boundaries, and reach goals for a stronger relationship. They will work with you both to ensure that the partnership is on equal footing and that neither of you feels taken advantage of. This is the easiest way for resentment to build if there is no progress.

Depression's impact on marriage can be felt in many ways. That's why it is important to understand the issues and talk openly with your partner. Going to marriage counseling can help support you with understanding, patience, and reassurance. With the right help and support, you can get through this difficult time together as a stronger couple.
