How Does Image Transformation Therapy Work?

ImTT is a type of therapy that helps people understand and process their emotions in a more somatic way. You might be asking: what does that mean? This means ImTT therapy can help you get "unstuck" from a feeling by helping you visually process the emotion along with completing breathing exercises.

Gain a Better Awareness of Your Body

Image Transformation Therapy does this by having you picture your feelings as a color. Then you will identify where the feeling lives in your body. For example, you might feel a heavy feeling in your chest that is due to anxiety. After identifying the feeling, the color of that feeling, and where it resides in your body and/or mind, you will then begin to deconstruct it visually. This is so you can "let go of it" mentally and emotionally. This can look like breaking the feeling down into smaller pieces, such as yellow colored particles for the anxiety, and then breathing those yellow colored particles from out of your chest.

Why Would Someone Try Image Transformation Therapy?

There are a lot of reasons someone may try Image Transformation Therapy. Some reasons are:

  • To help with past events that were traumatic

  • To help prepare for negative/uncomfortable experiences in the future

  • To help with depression

ImTT can help you process past traumatic events.

Maybe you've tried other forms of therapy for your trauma but haven't had much success. This type of therapy can help you process these emotions related to trauma. When completing ImTT for trauma, the goal is to gently release the negative feelings and images that are attached to the past trauma and that are currently driving your unwanted and often destructive behaviors. You will not have to relive your trauma, you will feel better, and you will begin to behave in a different and more positive manner.

It also helps you prepare for negative or uncomfortable experiences in the future.

Having ImTT to help prepare for future experiences that may be negative can help ease some of your anxiety or worry. This is done by helping you process the emotions attached to the experience before it even happens. Once you can see it and know where it's located, you can begin to work on releasing that fear from your body and deconstructing the negative anticipated image that is driving the fear. If you’ve been diagnosed with OCD, then you already know that it can be very challenging to cope with. It can make everyday tasks feel impossible. You may feel shame about your symptoms, or worry that you’ll never be able to manage your symptoms. It’s important to recognize that OCD is much more common than most people think. And as a result, OCD treatment is well researched and effective!

Before we get into it, it’s important to understand that there are three main components to OCD treatment.

One of the first steps of OCD treatment is psychoeducation. Psychoeducation is a component of therapy to help you understand your OCD. But, also how your brain works differently than those without OCD. OCD is a real disorder that affects brain function in a very specific way. It is not "fake" or made up. It often runs in families (due to genetic factors).

For example, if you are obsessing over germs and dirt, it’s not simply being “overdramatic” about cleanliness. Your brain is actually trying to keep you safe. However, these thoughts and images are intrusive and they take up a lot of space. Plus, they can be very distressing. But with the support of your therapist you can overcome your obsessions.

Overcoming Your Obsessions in ocd treatment

Obsessions are the thoughts, images, or impulses that pop into your mind over and over again. They're intrusive and can be very upsetting. However, with OCD treatment and the help of a therapist, you can learn to manage your obsessions.

There are many different types of therapy available for those who suffer from OCD. But, one of the most effective therapies is ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). ACT is a type of therapy that helps people understand that they are not their thoughts. For example, if you are obsessing over something dangerous, this doesn't mean you will do it.

You can Be Present In the Current Moment

With help from ACT and an OCD therapist, you can learn to let go of your obsessions. By focusing on what is most important to you in life and your values and resetting your focus, you can learn to be present in the current moment. You will be able to focus on what is more important to you rather than your obsessions and compulsions.

Working on Compulsions WITH AN OCD THERAPIST

Compulsions are the behaviors or rituals that you complete in line with your obsession with the goal of reducing anxiety. For example, if your obsession resolves around germs and dirt, you may wash your hands over and over again to reduce your anxiety. However, these compulsions can take up a lot of time and interfere with your daily life.

Through OCD therapy, you can work with your therapist to find ways to resist giving into compulsions.

You will learn how to live with your OCD and not let it control your life. ACT therapy can help you to become more goal-oriented. This way, you can focus on your goals rather than your OCD.

What's the Difference Between OCD and Anxiety? Thoughts from an OCD Therapist

You may be feeling like you're constantly worrying about everything. Or, you may have trouble focusing on anything, because your mind is always racing. Perhaps, you even have physical symptoms like a tight chest or stomach pain. You may wonder if you’re struggling with anxiety.

However, your worries could be focused on one particular thing. Something that really bothers you and doesn't make a lot of sense. For example, you may constantly worry about germs and contamination. Or, you may be fixated on the idea that something bad will happen to you or your loved ones. If this is the case, you may be dealing with OCD.

OCD and anxiety can feel very similar. Both can cause a lot of distress and make it hard to function in your day-to-day life. However, there are some key differences. And with support from a therapist, it is possible to manage both.

What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder. It usually starts in the teen or young adult years, but it can start in childhood as well. The symptoms you are faced with can change over time and can vary from person to person too.

OCD is characterized by unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors (compulsions). You may try to ignore these unwanted thoughts or stop your compulsions, but this can lead to more anxiety. And unfortunately, the symptoms can worsen when you’re in distress.

You can’t let go of your worries & Spend time actively calming those worries

It may be hard to control your unwanted thoughts. And sometimes, you feel the need to do things or internally say things to reduce anxiety or quiet those thoughts. And, as a result, OCD can take up a lot of time and energy.

For example, you may be obsessing over worries that you will get sick. Because of this, you may spend a lot of time washing your hands, avoiding places where you could get sick, or finding ways to make sure you are safe. Or, you may worry that you’ll say something rude without meaning to, so you’re constantly replaying conversations in your head or asking for reassurance from others that you weren’t rude. The bottom line is that these intrusive thoughts or the actions you take to calm the anxiety (rituals or compulsions) are taking up a lot of your time and energy.

As an OCD therapist, I often see people who are struggling with OCD, and it can be very difficult to manage. But with support and treatment, it is possible to reduce the symptoms of OCD and live a fulfilling life.

Signs and Symptoms of OCD

When it comes to OCD, there are a few key signs to look out for: obsessions and compulsions. These two signs of OCD can look different for everyone. It is more common to have both obsessions and compulsions, but sometimes, you can just have one or the other.

What are Obsessions?

Obsessions due to OCD are made up of repeated, persistent, unwanted thoughts or images that are intrusive and cause you discomfort. These obsessions are often about things that you are afraid of or that make you anxious. For example, you may be afraid of certain animals and have intrusive thoughts or images about them. Or, it may distress you if your things are not symmetrical or in order, so you have compulsions around straightening or organizing.

Obsessions often have themes of:

  • Worry that you might hurt someone or yourself

  • Fear of contamination or germs

  • Excessive focus on order or symmetry

  • Unwanted thoughts

  • Having difficulty with uncertainty

However, these “themes” can look different for everyone.

What are Compulsions?

Compulsions related to OCD are repetitive, intentional behaviors that you feel like you have to do. These compulsions are often done to reduce your anxiety or make you feel as if you’re preventing something bad from happening. For example, if you have an obsession with germs, you may wear latex gloves when you leave the house or wash your hands excessively.

Or, you may have rules or rituals you follow to help control your anxiety when you’re having obsessive thoughts. For example, you may touch the doorknob a certain number of times before you leave the house or have to sit in the same spot every time you eat.

As a therapist, I understand how rituals or rules can bring relief to those with OCD. However, it is important to note that compulsions often provide only temporary relief from anxiety. And, over time, they can get in the way of your everyday life, because they take up a lot of time and energy. But, with support from a therapist, you can learn how to manage your compulsions in a way that works for you.

What is Anxiety?

Now, let's talk about anxiety. Anxiety is a normal emotion that we can all feel at times. It is our body's way of responding to stress or danger. However, when anxiety is ongoing and severe, it can be hard to control and can interfere with your daily life. This is when it becomes a problem.

Anxiety can develop due to a variety of things:

  • Stressful life events

  • Trauma

  • Genetics

  • Health problems

For example, you may have anxiety due to stressful life events, such as starting a new job, moving, or going through a divorce. Or, you may have anxiety that is related to a trauma, such as being in a car accident. Anxiety can also be caused by genetics. This means if your parents or grandparents struggle with anxiety, you may be more likely to experience it as well. Lastly, anxiety can be caused by health problems. For example, you may have anxiety due to an underlying medical condition, such as thyroid problems or heart disease. 

Struggling with anxiety can be extremely difficult. But, with support and treatment, you can learn how to manage your anxiety and live a life that is full and meaningful.

Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety can look different for everyone, but some common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Feelings of worry, stress, or fear

  • Difficulty concentrating or sleeping

  • Avoiding things that make you anxious

  • Physical symptoms such as a racing heart, sweating, or shaking.

These are just a few examples of how anxiety can feel and look to you. Just remember that signs and symptoms of anxiety vary from person to person.

How are OCD and Anxiety Different?

Now that we have talked about OCD and anxiety, let's talk about how they are different.

As we discussed earlier, both OCD and anxiety can cause feelings of worry, stress, and fear. As an OCD and anxiety therapist, I know it can be difficult to tell these two conditions apart, because they share so many similarities.

However, there are some key ways that anxiety and OCD are different.

OCD, as we talked about, is characterized by obsessions and compulsions. Often you are obsessing about one thing in particular, such as contamination or symmetry. And, you will have compulsions that are repetitive and intentional behaviors that you feel like you need to do to ease your anxiety. For example, as we talked about earlier, you may wash your hands excessively or lock your door a certain number of times.

Anxiety, on the other hand, is characterized by intense feelings of worry, fear, or stress. Your feelings of anxiety may be about anything or nothing at all. It can also occur around specific events, such as public speaking or taking a test. And, unlike OCD, there are no compulsions with anxiety.  

Another difference is that your anxiety may go away after the stressful event is over. For example, if you have test anxiety, once the test is done, your anxiety will likely go away. However, with OCD, your obsessions and compulsions will likely continue even after the thing you are obsessing about is gone.

You can also consult a therapist to help you identify and manage your symptoms.

Deerwood Arboretum & Nature Center

Deerwood Arboretum and Nature Center is a beautiful place to relax and connect with nature. Located at 320 Deerwood Lane and on 27 acres of land, this park is perfect for a peaceful stroll or a picnic lunch.

This park is not far from Radnor Lake but is much smaller and secluded. There is a walking trail with a view of the Little Harpeth River, and a variety of trees that are labeled to make them easy to identify. Just Love Coffee Cafe

Just Love Coffee Cafe is a wonderful place to stop and get coffee, food, and pastries. But it's also a place known to have a calm atmosphere where you can enjoy peace, or get lost in your thoughts. The cafe has windows that face the street to allow natural lighting and adds to the relaxing ambiance. The staff is also very friendly and accommodating, which makes this place feel like a home away from home. This is a great place to get out of the house for a quick break from reality and just relax. Percy Warner Park features paved walking trails, overlooks, and historic stone walls. Percy Warner Park is also the home to The Allée. This is one of the many overlooks at the Warner Parks, but this one was recently restored. You will see beautiful views as you ascend The Allée which makes for a great place to relax and clear your mind.

If you're looking for a place to bring your dog with you, this park is also for you. Percy Warner Park allows dogs as long as they are on a leash, and there is even a dog park! This can be a great way to contribute to your self-care by getting some fresh air with your furry friend.

Edwin Warner Park

Edwin Warner Park is a great place to visit if your self-care routine includes exercise. It has trails with more miles than Percy Warner Park. So, if you're looking for a longer walk or hike, this is the place to go! The trails are paved so you don't have to worry about tripping over rocks either.

There is even an option for riding your bike or horseback riding if that's more your speed. This park is also home to various types of wildlife. You might see deer, chipmunks, or different types of birds while you're enjoying the peace of nature.

The Nature Center at Warner Parks

The Warner Parks Nature Center is a part of the vast Warner Parks. This is where you can attend classes about wildlife and the surrounding trails. It is also home to hummingbird and butterfly gardens along with greenhouses. This is a wonderful place to explore a new interest or continue to foster a continuing passion. The Nature Center also has monthly events for all ages, such as bird banding and searching the river for animals that live there. You can explore nature in various ways and find a way to connect with the world around you. Which also allows you to connect with God.

The Perch-Brentwood

The Perch in Brentwood is a quaint cafe that historically used to be a post office. This cafe is a fun place to get breakfast as it has wonderful crepes and Belgian waffles. But also coffee, if you are looking for a boost!

The inside of the cafe is small and very cozy. It’s the perfect place to relax with a good book or spend quality time with your family. There is also an outdoor sitting area under a gondola where you can bring along a pet to enjoy the outdoors.

You're getting ready to have your first online therapy session, but you're feeling a bit anxious about what it will be like. Will you be able to really focus on your session? Will there be any technology issues? It's all new to you, but there's no need to worry. Everyone has to start somewhere. Even I had my first online session at some point.

Online therapy is a very effective form of therapy, but just like any form of therapy it’s normal to have a few questions at first. That’s why I wrote this blog with my tips on preparing for your online therapy session to help you have a smooth and comfortable experience.

Prepare Your Space for online therapy

First, you want to make sure you're in a quiet and calm space. Ideally, a private space where you feel comfortable talking. However, if you don't have a space with a lot of privacy, you can use a noise machine. This can help to drown out any background noise, along with keeping anyone from overhearing your conversation.

If you're feeling anxious or you get easily distracted, you can have a fidget toy nearby. As a therapist, I understand that sometimes our minds can race. Having something to fidget with can help to calm your mind and help you focus on the conversation.

Having a cup of water or tea available is also a good idea. Staying hydrated is always important, and this way you can take a sip if your throat gets dry while you’re talking. I also encourage you to make sure you're in a comfortable sitting position before getting started. Doing so will ensure that you don't end up feeling uncomfortable at any point, or feeling like you need to move around constantly.

Check Your Technology

Next, you're going to want to make sure that your device has a good internet connection. Charge your laptop or phone beforehand. Or, keep it plugged in during your session. This way you won't have to worry about the battery dying during your session.

Making sure you put your phone on "Do Not Disturb" is also smart. By doing so, you won’t have any notifications coming in and distracting you from your session.

If you’re using a new platform for therapy that you haven’t used before, make sure that your microphone and webcam work. And, that they are also compatible. Sometimes different browsers don't support certain features, so it's important that you check this ahead of time. This way there are no issues when it comes time for your session.

Take a Minute to Relax BEFORE your therapy session

Now that you have gotten comfortable and checked your technology, it's time to take a minute to relax. This is especially important if you're feeling anxious about your session. You can do some deep breathing exercises. Or just something you enjoy that calms you down. This can be reading, listening to music, or journaling about what you want to focus on in your session.

Remember to give yourself this time. This will allow you to destress so you won't feel rushed or overwhelmed when it comes time for your session. It will also ensure that you have space to think about your session and what you want your focus to be on.

Breaking Narcissistic Patterns: Can a Narcissist Learn Compassion?

Do you feel like you've been stuck in the same frustrating pattern over and over again? Are you tired of feeling lonely and misunderstood? Have you been told you are a narcissist and been wondering if there is a way you can make the changes needed to have healthy relationships? If you are nodding your head "yes" to any of these questions, then this blog post is for you.

OR, if you care about a narcissist but are tired of feeling like you are being steamrolled, used, and manipulated, then this blog is for you as well.

Step 1: A Narcissist has to want to change.

The first step in making any change is admitting that there is a problem. If the narcissist in your life does not want to change or even admit that there is a problem, then there is no hope that things will get better. The narcissist has to be willing to see how their behavior is impacting those around them and be motivated to make a change.

Honestly, when people find themselves struggling with narcissistic patterns and have trouble expressing genuine compassion, these can be very difficult patterns to break.

And unfortunately, if you or a loved one has strong narcissistic tendencies or narcissistic personality disorder and aren't highly motivated to change, then therapy simply won't be effective.

Is Narcissism Ever Healthy?

First, let's touch on this question because it is important to understand that not all narcissism is bad. In fact, a little bit of healthy narcissism is actually necessary for success. For example, public figures such as politicians and celebrities need to have a healthy dose of narcissism or they would not be able to get up on stage and perform. They need to have the ability to think highly of themselves in order to be confident in front of large audiences.

The key here is that healthy narcissism is about having a balanced view of oneself. It's not about thinking you are better than everyone else or putting others down in order to feel good about yourself. It's about having a realistic view of your own talents and abilities and being able to use those talents to achieve your goals.

And often, it's about developing compassion and using those traits such as your confidence to show compassion for others and make a positive change in the world.

But if a Narcissist is Ready to Change, Therapy Can Help

However, there is hope! There is a possibility of change for narcissists who are motivated to develop empathy for others. In my last blog post, we hit on some of the general ways that therapy can help a narcissist. But in order to break these narcissistic patterns, the narcissist must be willing to do some self-reflection and put in the hard work.

Learning Compassion

Learning compassion is not easy, particularly for a narcissist. And many never do. Compassion is not something that comes naturally to most people, let alone narcissists. Narcissists tend to be very focused on their own needs. So, learning to have empathy for others can be a real challenge.

But if you are coming to realize that you have strong narcissist tendencies and want to learn compassion to improve your relationships, you can. You don’t have to be lonely; you can change and do good in the world.

It is possible for narcissists to learn compassion. With therapy, narcissists can learn to understand and even share the feelings of others. They can learn to see things from another person's perspective. And with time and practice, they can learn to care about the needs of others.

You Must Have Motivation to Learn Compassion

Narcissists aren't by nature really motivated to learn compassion. But, they often realize that their narcissistic patterns are not working well for them. They may come to therapy because they want to improve their relationships or they may be struggling with loneliness or anxiety. Maybe they've been given an ultimatum and if they don't change they'll lose a significant other or a job.

Whatever the reason, in order for therapy to be effective, the narcissist must be motivated to learn compassion. And that motivation needs to be enough to really keep them committed to doing the work. If you are not motivated to change, then therapy will not be effective.

A Narcissist Must be Committed to Change

Because it's not easy to change narcissistic patterns of behavior, a narcissist must be committed to doing the work. Change takes time and effort. And, unfortunately, there is no quick fix. So, if a narcissist is not willing to put in the time and effort, then change is not likely to happen.

But if a narcissist is committed to change, therapy can help. Therapy can provide the tools and support that a narcissist needs to learn compassion.

Through therapy, narcissists can start to break habits and start to think about things differently. Everyone has what we call "schemas" that impact how they think about the world. These are just a specific cognitive framework that helps you interpret new information as you interact with the world and they're ingrained so deeply in your thinking that you filter new information through them without even thinking.

In order for therapy to be effective in helping a person learn compassion, you'll have to gain insight into the old schemas you've developed. You'll begin to look closely at these schemas that have acted as "shortcuts" in how you make sense of things and understand the world. And, you'll have to start to transform those schemas so you have a healthier way to look at the world around you. In other words, you'll need to learn a new way to think about things that is better for those around you and better for your relationships.

This is not easy work. But, it is possible. And, if you're committed to doing the work, you can learn compassion.

The Bottom Line

Whether or not a narcissist can learn compassion is up to the individual. If a narcissist is motivated to change and is willing to put in the hard work, then yes, it is possible for them to learn compassion. But, it's not easy and it takes time. So, don't expect overnight miracles. And keep in mind that many narcissists don't change. So, it truly does come down to having strong motivation, ongoing commitment to change and working with a mental health provider who is willing and able to help you make lasting changes in your life.

If you’re reading this, you may be wondering if therapy can help with narcissism. You’re not alone. Narcissism has become a buzzword in recent years, and there is a lot of confusion around what it means and how to deal with it.

What is Narcissism?

First, it’s important to understand the difference between narcissistic tendencies and an actual disorder. Many people have some narcissistic qualities, but that doesn’t mean they have a disorder. It's actually pretty common to have a few narcissistic tendencies, and it doesn’t automatically mean you need therapy.

What are Narcissistic Tendencies?

To start off, let’s clarify the difference between narcissistic tendencies and an actual disorder. A person with narcissistic tendencies might exhibit some of the following behaviors:

  • They have an inflated sense of self-importance

  • They need constant admiration from others

  • They are very sensitive to criticism

  • They take advantage of others

  • They have a sense of entitlement

  • They are often envious of others

  • They lack empathy for others

While some of these behaviors may not be a big deal at times, they can become a problem when they start to interfere with a person’s life. If you find that your narcissistic tendencies are causing problems in your relationships or at work, it might be time to seek help from a therapist.

What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)?

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), however, is a different story. NPD is a mental health condition that can cause problems in all areas of life, from work and school to relationships. If you have NPD, you may not even be aware of it because narcissism can be hard to spot in yourself.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V), to diagnose narcissistic personality disorder, the following criteria must be met:

  • An exaggerated sense of self-importance

  • A need for constant admiration from others

  • A lack of empathy for others

  • A sense of entitlement

If you think you or someone you know might have NPD, it’s important to seek professional help. A therapist can help you understand your condition and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

What Causes Narcissism?

There is no one “cause” of narcissism, but there are some risk factors that may contribute to its development. These include things like childhood trauma, abuse, neglect, or a parent with narcissistic tendencies. Honestly, not enough narcissists come to therapy. However, sometimes narcissists start to realize what they have to lose if they don't change and do come to therapy ready to do the work and change.
