WHY VITUS COUNSELING?

“THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE DARKNESS, AND THE DARKNESS HAS NOT OVERCOME IT.”

- JOHN 1:5

I am aware that you have your choice of Nashville area therapists, but I would like to take the time to explain what makes my practice unique. As a Catholic therapist, my spirituality inspires me to treat every single one of my clients with dignity and respect. My faith inspires me to view each and every one of my client’s problems from a lens of mercy and grace. I believe that you as a child of God have the power to manage and overcome your emotional burdens and challenges when you are provided with the right tools to do so.

At Vitus Counseling, I see Teens and Adults who Are Going Though Challenging Times

You don’t have to be Catholic to benefit from therapy at Vitus Counseling. I work with Catholics, Christians of all types, and all spiritual truth seekers. Furthermore, I see teens, adults, working professionals, stay-at-home parents, families, and couples. I have training to provide a variety of counseling services to best help you overcome the difficulties you’re experiencing.

I offer a variety of mental health services to help you find light in THE dark places including:

  • Online therapy in Tennessee: I understand that it is not always possible for busy individuals, couples, or families to make it to my Brentwood, TN counseling clinic for in-person therapy. So I offer online therapy for anyone living in the state of Tennessee to treat a variety of mental health concerns.

  • Catholic Counseling: I offer counseling for Catholics who are struggling with a variety of mental health or emotional challenges. The therapeutic interventions I use are grounded in the traditions of the Catholic faith and spitituality.

  • Anxiety treatment and depression treatment: During therapy I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and exposure therapy to treat anxiety and depression. You will learn to identify your unhelpful anxious or depressed thoughts, cope with the symptoms of depression or anxiety, and find a new and healthy way of thinking.

  • Addiction treatment: I help individuals who are dealing with alcohol and drug misuse, sex addiction, and porn addiction maintain their recovery and cope with triggers that could cause them to relapse. I use motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy to help my clients identify the things in their life that prompt them to use and give them tools to cope with these urges.

  • ADHD treatment: I have a lot of experience working with teen and adult clients with ADHD. First, I will work with you, or your teen, to help you understand what it means to receive an ADHD diagnosis. Then, I will use a variety of behavioral therapy techniques to help you cope with your ADHD symptoms.

  • Trauma treatment: I specialize in trauma treatment, especially in helping survivors of childhood trauma. First, I want to provide them with safety and immediate symptom relief. Then, my goal is to help them process what happened and to go from surviving to thriving. I help them heal by using Biofeedback, Brainspotting, Image Transformation Therapy, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

  • Couples therapy and marriage counseling: I am passionate about helping couples overcome their differences to build a happy and healthy relationship. I help them to improve their relationship or marriage by utilizing the Gottman Method.

  • Family therapy: I work with many families to help them identify and correct the issues they are having at home. Ultimately, my goal is to help you and your loved ones improve the way you communicate and interact with each other. To do this I will use Bowenian Family Systems Therapy and Structural Family Therapy.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Photo of St. Vitus the namesake for Vitus Counseling in Germantown, TN where therapist Stu cook offers family therapy, couples counseling, adhd treatment, anxiety treatment, depression treatment, trauma treatment, online therapy in tennessee, and ad…

The name Vitus Counseling is deeply connected to the work I do as a counselor. Saint Vitus was an important early Christian saint and martyr. Today he is recognized as one of the Fourteen Martyrs who gives aid in times of trouble. At Vitus Counseling, I seek to provide all of my clients with a safe place where they can be heard and cared for during their own times of trouble. I also chose the name Vitus for my counseling practice, because the name is closely associated with the Latin word vita. Vita means “life.” At Vitus Counseling, I strive to give my clients a therapeutic experience that will revive and refresh them and empower them to live their lives to the fullest.

WHY I chose the rooster LOGO for my counseling practice

I chose a rooster for my logo, because the rooster is an ancient Christian symbol for life, victory, and hope. Just as the rooster crows each morning to announce the end of the darkness and the dawning of new light, so Christ by his lie, death, and resurrection announced the victory of the light over the darkness. At Vitus Counseling, my goal is to provide my clients with the tools to heal so they can experience light in the dark places and find true freedom.

My Faith-Based Counseling Clinic

My office is conveniently located in the Chapple Building, an office building that is centrally located in the Maryland Farms business office park and located on the main road.

I strive to create a calm environment for my clients where they can relax and escape the real world for an hour. I want you to feel comfortable while you’re here, so I recommend that you silence all of your electronic devices so you can focus on the healing work you are doing in therapy.
